Let us simplify the process of buying a fridge or freezer for your home

17/03/2017

A fridge is often the focal point of the kitchen and, in the space of ‘all things food’, it is arguably one of the most important electrical appliances in the room. From ensuring your food is kept fresh and safe to eat, to keeping your favourite drinks cool, it’s certainly an item that needs some pre-purchase research and consideration.

Let us simplify this process for you by helping to identify the fridge for you. From key information on sizes and styles, to advanced features and energy efficiency, this guide explains everything you need to know to ensure you select the best model for you.

Fridge or fridge/freezer?

This is a fundamental question, as it will impact on your choice of appliance considerably. You need to think about whether you want just a fridge or both a fridge and a freezer. If both, are they one appliance or two standalone units? Could an icebox suffice for your freezer needs or do you require a 50/50 split? Smeg offers fridges and freezers individually or in a combination of 50/50, 60/40 and even 70/30 (fridge/freezer ratio), giving flexibility dependent on your situation. To enhance flexibility even further, Smeg’s FQ60 four-door fridge freezer has a 77 litre convertible compartment which can be fridge or freezer dependent on which groceries you’ve bought that week!

Freestanding or Integrated?

The decision whether to go freestanding or integrated depends entirely on your available space and kitchen style. Many modern kitchens use integrated solutions as this maximizes every available bit of space and conceals appliances behind built-in furniture. When considering integrated, there are many options, including under counter separates, combined tall fridge freezer units and even individual tall fridges and freezers. For example, models such as the S7220FNDP and S7323LFEP are designed to be fitted into a tall housing unit and can be positioned side by side in order to create a large refrigeration space that maximizes food storage capabilities.

In a more spacious kitchen, you may have the space to place a freestanding appliance, such as a large American side-by-side design or a retro fridge for the ultimate statement. One of Smeg’s newest freestanding side-by-side fridge freezers comes in the popular Victoria aesthetic which captures the essence of timeless classic design in four eye catching colours. However, if the sleek simplicity of stainless steel keeps your cool, the FQ75XPED is just one of many top spec appliances in this popular finish. With an American style side-by-side, the added extra of a built in ice machine and water dispenser also become an option which many people find very handy, especially in a family home.

Style

Once you’ve decided on the how you plan to use the fridge and which space in the kitchen you should place it, the next thing to consider is, what kind of style statement do you want to make? A freestanding model allows the appliance to make the statement whereas, an integrated relies on the kitchen furniture to make the impact. Smeg and style are intrinsically linked; we have always produced function and beautiful products. If you want a model that will add a touch of vibrancy and personality to the room, then one of our iconic 50’s retro range might be best for you. Smeg’s fabulous retro fridges are award winning and in 2015 wont the prestigious “Design Classic Awards at the Designer Awards” in London. From the petite 42 litre FAB5 mini bar to the spacious 484 litre FAB50 fridge freezer the range includes six sizes and comes in 12 standard colours with other special editions released across the years. From bold lime green to traditional cream, a kitchen will never look dull with Smeg FAB fridge.

But we’re not all about the retro fridge, despite what people think. If you want something more understated, then perhaps one of the sleek, stainless steel models from our Classic range, such as the RF354RX, is more for you. This model’s design is timeless and would work beautifully alongside other kitchen styles and colour schemes – and with a built in wine cooler, who wouldn’t want one of these?!

Eating and drinking preferences

Your cooking style should most certainly be considered when selecting a fridge. If you are a lover of fresh produce, a full height fridge such as the FAB28 or stainless steel UK26PXNF3 is for you. Alternatively many of Smeg’s American side-by-side refrigerators, such as the recently added pastel blue Victoria FQ960PB, also have clever preservation technologies built in. These include Life Plus drawers with a controlled temperature which preserve perishable items for longer, and Natural Blue Plus Lights, a unique lighting system which extends the life of fresh fruits and vegetables.

For those “on the go” and preferring the convenience of freezers, Smeg’s full height freezers may be more suitable. They include frost free technology which prevents the buildup of ice and fast freezing functions which come in very hand when freezing a large quantity of fresh food. Activating this fast function allows the appliance to bring the temperature right down and freeze items even quicker than usual. usage.

If you are partial to a glass of wine (or two), then door storage is a must. With multiple shelves, the tall column style fridge is most appropriate. We recommend the Smeg FQ60XPE as it doesn’t compromise on general space. However, for the true wine connoisseurs, Smeg have a real treat; our award winning Dolce Stil Novo wine coolers. Available in a 45 cm built-in version and an 82 cm under-counter version, they are perfect for everything from Chianti whites to Magnums from the Champagne region. If you really want to splash out, why not partner them with a built-in Sommelier drawer and really impress friends and family alike.

Efficiency, energy saving and noise
Although we often want to show off our fridge or freezer, we don’t always want to hear from them and we certainly want to keep the impact with the styling and not on the environment. All Smeg fridges and freezers have at least an A+ energy rating with some achieving an A++ rating. Ever sensitive to the need to safeguard the environment, Smeg’s cooling appliances are also completely free of CFCs and HFCs.

Alongside these impressive statistics, some of our fridges feature LED interior lighting which is more energy efficient and lasts longer than traditional bulbs. We have also developed a power saving mode which is particularly useful when you go on holiday; it allows you to disable the refrigerator and keep the freezer working which saves electricity and doesn’t waste frozen food.

When it comes to noise levels, we’re also innovating. Look out for appliances with a low dBA rating; the lower it is, the quieter the appliance. Smeg has installed excellent insulation specifically designed to muffle the sound generated during operation, which keeps noise levels to a minimum. Our range of FAB5 mini bars are so quiet, you can put them in a bedroom and still have a perfectly quiet night’s sleep.

Extra special fridge collaborations
Smeg appliances are revered for innovative design, something we’ve bought to some of our collaborations with iconic brands. Inspired by the universally known Fiat 500 hatchback, the Smeg500 is one example of this and a real labour of love. The unique cooler is made from original Fiat 500 parts with working lights and switches for the extra wow factor. Available in a variety of bright colourways, the Smeg500 is a memorable addition to any bar, restaurant or the home of Italian retro lovers. Alternatively, for the fashion followers in the world, our recent collaboration with Dolce and Gabbana has taken the iconic 50’s style fridge and given it a very stylish new dress. Each fridge is one-of-a-kind and features images hand painted by Sicilian artists. Here the fridge is more than something to cool your food and drink – it becomes a piece of art, an Italian masterpiece.
