Fridge Freezer Sizes and Measurement Guide

Wondering which fridge freezer size is best for a family of four, or if your ideal integrated model will fit seamlessly into your new kitchen? Our size and measurement guide covers everything you need to know to choose the perfect fridge freezer for your home.

Please note that this size guide is for fridge freezers; we have a separate size & measurement guide for refrigerators.

What Sizes of Fridge Freezers Can I Choose From?

Fridge freezers come in a wide array of sizes designed to fit various kitchen styles, space requirements, and storage needs. Take a look  at the main types of fridge freezers you can choose from:

Tall Freestanding Fridge Freezers

These models stand alone and can be placed anywhere with a power source, making them ideal for flexible kitchen layouts. They are available in a range of sizes, typically ranging between 140cm - 200cm high and often feature a width of between 60cm - 70cm.

Small Freestanding Fridge Freezers

If you’re more limited on space, a small freestanding fridge freezer may be the answer to your needs. This appliance typically stands between 70cm - 100cm tall and measures around 40cm - 50cm wide.

Undercounter Integrated Fridge Freezers

Due to their small size, you won’t normally find under-counter integrated fridge freezers. Fridges with a small icebox are actually just called fridges, and therefore our fridge size and measurements guide will be able to help with more information.

Tall Built-In Fridge Freezers

Integrated fridge freezers are built to fit with your cabinetry, blending with your kitchen design seamlessly. The height of this appliance varies, depending on the size of your cabinetry, ranging between 140cm - 200cm tall and 60cm - 70cm wide, requiring proper airflow surrounding the nearby cabinetry.

American-Style Fridge Freezers

Often featuring double doors, these models provide generous space for larger households. American-styled fridge freezers have a typical height of 175cm - 180cm and are wider than standard fridge freezers, the width often spanning between 80cm to 100cm.

Choosing the Right Fridge vs Freezer Size Ratio

When selecting a fridge freezer, it's essential to choose the right balance between fridge and freezer space based on your household needs and food storage habits. This is often determined by a fridge-to-freezer ratio, with the internal capacity measured in cubic feet and/or litres.

Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • If you have a larger household that frequently purchases fresh produce, you’ll likely benefit from more fridge space; consider a fridge-to-freezer ratio of 60/40, 70/30 or even 80/20.
  • If you do weekly or bi-weekly shopping trips and need space for bulk items, a more even compartment ratio might be more beneficial. A 50/50 split could work well if you often prepare and store frozen meals or buy in bulk.
  • For households that rely on frozen goods, like frozen vegetables, meats, or pre-made meals, a larger freezer compartment will be advantageous. In these cases, look for a ratio of 40/60 or 30/70.

Consider the internal capacity for your fridge freezer, based on an estimated number of shopping bags that could fit inside the appliance. As a general guideline, use the following:

  • 1-2 People: We recommend a capacity of 100-200 litres, big enough to fit approximately 5 to 10 full shopping bags. (eg C9174DN2D)
  • 3-4 People: We recommend a capacity of 200-300 litres, big enough to fit approximately 10 to 15 full shopping bags. (eg FAB32RWH5UK)
  • 5-6 People: We recommend a capacity of 300+ litres, big enough to fit approximately 15+ full shopping bags. (eg FQI60KD)

How to Measure a Fridge Freezer

Measuring a fridge freezer for your home involves taking a few essential measurements to ensure it fits perfectly in the chosen space.

Overall Height

  • For freestanding fridge freezers, measure from the floor to the highest point of the appliance if you're replacing it like-for-like, or measure your available space if height isn’t restricted.

  • For integrated fridge freezers, measure the internal height of the open cabinet space where the appliance will go, from the base to the top.

  • Note that some fridge freezers come with adjustable feet, which can make a difference in adjusting the height to fit your space when replacing an existing appliance.

Overall Width

  • Measure the width of the fridge freezer from one side to the other to ensure it fits within the available space in your kitchen or chosen location.

  • Ensure you account for any hinges or protrusions that might impact clearance when opening the doors, and remember to check for adjustable feet, as these can affect overall placement flexibility.

Overall Depth

  • Measure the depth of the fridge freezer from the back panel to the front, and account for the door(s).

  • Account for any rear protrusions, as some units extend deeper than the side panel suggests. This measurement ensures the appliance won’t stick out too far into the room or block nearby cabinets and countertops while allowing enough airflow to cool the compressor.

  • Freestanding models often have handles for moving, and integrated units typically include “spacers” or “bumpers” to protect water and electrical lines, so ensure you leave enough room for these features as well.

Important Installation Considerations

There are many important considerations to make when you’ve chosen your fridge freezer, especially when it comes to the installation of your brand-new appliance. Take a look at some of our top tips:

  • Door Swing: If your fridge freezer has a reversible door or a side-by-side design, consider the space required for the door(s) to open fully without obstruction. This ensures easy access when loading and organising your fridge freezer.

  • Plan Your Route: When installing a fridge freezer, plan your route in advance. Assess your main access points, including doorways, hallways, staircases, and tight corners. Ensure the flooring is stable along the path and in the placement area.

  • Protecting Your Floors: Use protective coverings, like moving blankets or cardboard, to shield your floors during installation. This helps prevent scratches and dents, especially on expensive tiles, laminate, vinyl, or hardwood floors.

  • Appliance Placement: Ensure your fridge freezer is placed in a level area with adequate airflow around it to prevent overheating. Position the appliance near a power outlet to avoid the need for long extension cords, which can be a safety hazard.

FAQs

Do fridge freezers have a "standard size"?

No, there generally isn’t an industry "standard size". However, most freestanding fridge freezers in the UK range from about:

  • 55cm to 70cm in width,
  • 160cm to 200cm in height, and
  • 55cm to 75cm in depth.

What if my fridge freezer has adjustable feet?

Adjustable feet allow you to modify the height slightly, which can help level the appliance or fit it into a specific space. Be sure to account for these when measuring!

How often should I clean my fridge freezer?

You should aim to clean your fridge freezer’s interior roughly every 3 months, or as soon as any spillage occurs. This helps maintain the hygiene and efficiency of your appliance.

How do I install a fridge freezer?

Always refer to the instruction manual provided with your fridge freezer, since not all fridge freezers are the same. This is a typical* installation process;

  1. Prepare and measure the space prior to making your purchase.
  2. Unpack and position the fridge freezer.
  3. Your kitchen should have an easily accessible isolator switch nearby. Test that this is the isolator for the socket before proceeding.
  4. Once tested, ensure this is turned OFF.
  5. Then, plug in the fridge freezer to the nearest socket (normally underneath the kitchen cabinets). That socket can be turned on, as long as the isolator is correctly turned OFF.
  6. Adjust any shelves and drawers to your liking.
  7. Clean the interior to remove any packaging residue.
  8. After 12 hours, turn on the isolator switch. You will normally be able to hear the compressor running, and the fridge freezer light will work when the door is open.
  9. Monitor the temperature of the fridge and freezer compartments over time.
  10. Once at the desired temperature, begin placing items into the appliance's shelving and drawers.

* Note:  This is an abbreviated guide and does not constitute formal instructions. As always, refer to the relevant instructions for your product, and if in doubt, seek the help of a professional installer.

How much ventilation should I leave around my fridge freezer?

To ensure proper airflow, you should leave around 5cm around the sides of your fridge freezer, keeping all vents clear; this prevents your fridge freezer from overheating. However, refer to your instruction manual, as some appliances may need more ventilation space, and some integrated units can accommodate less.

How can I maximise energy efficiency with my fridge freezer?

To ensure energy efficiency with your fridge freezer, keep the temperature settings to appropriate levels (usually between 1-4°C for the fridge and -18°C for the freezer). Keep the duration and frequency of door openings to a minimum, and ensure that all seals around the door are clean, tight, and free from damage.

What common mistakes are there to avoid?

Common mistakes that people often make with fridge freezers include:

  • Placing the appliance near heat sources, such as radiators and ovens.
  • Skipping installation instructions on the user manual, leading to improper setup.
  • Not allowing any room around the outside of the appliance for ventilation.
  • Overfilling the fridge, which can obstruct airflow and hinder proper cooling.
  • Not accounting for the door swing when measuring available space (including handles).
  • Not checking for any obstructions to the rear of the unit, including pipes or skirting boards.
