FAQs

Smeg kettles blend iconic Italian craftsmanship, superior quality, and fast boiling technology, offering an eco-friendly solution for your kettle needs. Browse from our range of iconic Smeg kettles and colours to find the seamless match for your kitchen.

What size kettle do I need?

The ideal size kettle depends on your needs. Kettles typically come in sizes from 0.5 litres to 1.7 litres but can get as large as 5 litres for a kitchen kettle.

Smeg kettles come in two sizes. Our standard and variable temperature kettles have a capacity of 1.7 litres, whereas our mini kettles have a capacity of 0.6 litres.

How much does it cost to boil a kettle?

How much it costs to boil a kettle depends on the power of the kettle, how long it takes to boil, and the price you pay for your electricity, which is measured in kilowatts per hour (kWh).

At the time of writing, the current average price of electricity in the UK is 24.50 pence per kWh. A kettle that takes 3 minutes to boil 1 litre of water at 3,000 watts per hour would cost you around 3.68 pence to boil, and make around 4 cups of tea.

You can save on boiling your kettle by only filling it with the amount of water you need to use and buying an energy-efficient, fast-boiling kettle.

How should I clean my Smeg kettle exterior?

Keep your kettle's exterior in top condition by cleaning it regularly once it has cooled. Apply a non-abrasive cleaner to a damp cloth, wipe the surface thoroughly, and finish by drying with a soft or microfibre cloth.

Do I need to descale a Smeg kettle?

To keep your kettle performing at its best, regularly descale it to remove deposits. Use a dedicated descaling product following the instructions, or opt for household vinegar as an alternative. Let our home economists talk you through the process here.

Which kettles are the most energy-efficient?

Kettles with a fast boiling time, automatic shut-off, and made from quality, insulating materials are generally the most energy-efficient and can use up to 20% less energy. Additionally, electric kettles with a high wattage can boil water faster, reducing the amount of energy needed. Smeg kettles are made with this in mind and are durable and energy-efficient options for your kitchen.

How many watts does a Smeg kettle use?

Smeg kettles use 3000 watts. Compared to the average kettles, which range from 1,200 to 2,000 watts on average, Smeg kettles come to a boil much faster than standard.

How long does a kettle take to boil?

How long a kettle takes to boil generally depends on the kettle's wattage and how much water you put in. On average, it takes about 3 to 5 minutes to boil 1 litre of water in a kettle. Due to the fast-boiling technology and high wattage, Smeg kettles take 2 minutes 15 seconds to boil 1 litre of water and 4–5 minutes to boil a full kettle of 1.7 litres.

How many times should you boil a new kettle before using it?

It is generally recommended that you boil and empty a new kettle twice before using it for the first time, as this will help remove any particles that may have fallen inside during the manufacturing or shipping process.

How do you dispose of a kettle?

As your kettle is classified as waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), please do not throw it in the bin. Instead, there are better options available:

  • Donate: If your existing kettle is still safe, fully functioning, and in good condition, ’re upgrading to a new kettle, it’s always worth checking with local charities if they accept donations of small electrical appliances.
  • Recycle: Check with your local council to see if they offer recycling and collection services for small electrical appliances. Many councils will collect as part of your weekly or biweekly bin collection service.
  • Take-back scheme: Many retail stores offer a take-back scheme, so it’s well worth checking with the retailer or supplier you purchased your kettle from to see if they will take it back for recycling and disposal.
  • Take it to a local recycling centre: All household waste and recycling centres have drop-off points for electrical appliances. Some centres even have areas where they can be refurbished and reused, giving your old kettle a new lease of life for someone else.

How long is the warranty on a Smeg kettle?

The standard warranty on our kettles is 2 years.
