FAQs

Smeg’s award-winning toasters combine impeccable Italian craftsmanship, elegant design, and top-tier performance with both 2-slot and 4-slot options. And with our range of iconic Smeg colours and our new range of matte finishes, we have the toaster to suit your kitchen.

What should you consider when buying a new toaster?

When deciding when to buy a new toaster, we recommend you consider the following:

  • How many slices do you need? If you now find yourself needing to do multiple rounds of toast, it may be time for a bigger toaster.

  • For busy or larger households, would you benefit from being able to control the temperature of each pair of racks independently?

  • Useful features like a defrost button make it easy to toast frozen bread quickly when in a rush, while a reheat function ensures your toast stays warm.

  • The quality of the toaster itself (cheap toasters can be a false economy if they provide you with an insipid, anaemic piece of toast on one side and charcoal the other.). Quality components hold the toast centrally and provide an even level of browning to achieve the perfect morning crunch.

  • Design aesthetics. At Smeg, we are well known for our iconic premium designs, which elevate your toaster to something you are proud to have on display

  • Whether you might want to toast wider items, such as bagels or toasted sandwiches

  • And available space on your kitchen worktop. This might determine whether you opt for:

    • standard 2-slice toaster

    • 2-slot / 4-slice (longslot) toaster, or a

    • 4-slot / 4-slice (wide) toaster

Should I get a 2 or 4-slice toaster?

When deciding between a 2 or a 4-slice toaster, start by considering how much toast your household typically consumes. If your family enjoys breakfast toast daily, a 4-slice toaster is ideal for saving time by toasting multiple slices at once.

For smaller kitchens, a 2-slot, 4-slice toaster (or "longslot toaster") is a space-saving option with the capacity to toast larger items. If space isn't a concern, a traditional 4-slot toaster offers additional flexibility with independent browning controls for each pair of slots, allowing customisation for different toast levels.

Look for toasters with extra-wide slots to accommodate not only thick slices of bread but also items like bagels, waffles, or crumpets.

Can Smeg toasters fit bagels?

Yes, Smeg toasters can fit bagels, and our toaster even has a special bagel setting that is designed to improve the toasting experience for the shape of a bagel. Perfect for bagel lovers!

Not only that, with our range of toaster accessories you can also do far more, such as warming buns, rolls, flatbreads, or pastries such as croissants. Our bun warmer can also be used to keep a rack of toast warmer for longer.

How do I use a Smeg toaster?

Using a Smeg toaster couldn’t be simpler, and we have used the best in toaster technology to give you complete control over the toasting process.

  1. To use a Smeg toaster, ensure it is plugged in and turned on at the wall socket.

  2. Select your preferred browning level using the control knob, and choose any additional functions like reheat, defrost, or bagel.

  3. Insert your bread, bagels, or crumpet into the slots and push the lever down to start toasting; the toaster will pop up the items when done. Use the cancel button to stop mid-cycle if needed.

  4. Empty the crumb tray regularly and wipe the exterior with a damp cloth to keep it clean.

Should you run a new toaster before you use it or the first time?

Yes, it is generally recommended to run a toaster while it is empty before you use it for the first time. This will burn off any residue from its packing and transportation and ensure your first batch of toast is free from any unwanted tastes.

Are Smeg toasters easy to clean?

To keep your toaster looking its best, clean it regularly after use once it has cooled down. Use non-abrasive, chlorine-free cleaners applied to a damp cloth, then wipe and dry with a soft or microfibre cloth.

What do the numbers on a toaster mean?

Smeg toasters include an easy-to-use control dial with a series of numbers. The numbers on a toaster correspond to browning level. Higher numbers indicate a longer toasting time, resulting in a browner, crispier toast.

How much energy does a toaster use?

How much energy a toaster uses depends on the model of the toaster and how brown you would like your toast. For example, Smeg toasters use 950W, 1500W, or 2000W depending on if it is a 2-slice toaster, a 2-slot 4-slice toaster, or a 4-slice toaster.

On average, it takes 3 minutes to toast a piece of bread, using 0.048 kWh for a 2-slice toaster, 0.075 kWh for a 2-slot, 4-slice toaster, or 0.1 kWh for a 4-slice toaster.

This equals 0.58 pence, 0.9 pence, or 1.2 pence per use, depending on local energy rates, etc.

How do you dispose of a toaster?

As your toaster is considered waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), it should not be disposed of in your household bin. Instead, consider these environmentally friendly options:

  • Donate: If your toaster is still in good working condition, consider donating it to local charities that accept small electrical appliances.

  • Recycle: Check with your local council for recycling or collection services for small electrical items, often included in regular bin collections.

  • Take-Back Schemes: Many retailers offer take-back programs where they accept old appliances for proper recycling. Check with the store or supplier where you purchased your toaster.

  • Take it to a Recycling Centre: Visit a local household waste and recycling centre, which often has designated drop-off points for electrical items. Some centres may refurbish and reuse appliances, giving your toaster a second life.

These options help ensure your old toaster is responsibly disposed of or repurposed, minimising environmental impact.

How long is the warranty on a Smeg toaster?
