The Interview

1. Tell us a little about your kitchen renovation. What did the kitchen space look like before you started renovating?

Our Kitchen when we bought the house, was a narrow galley kitchen, with zero storage, over two levels and full of damp. It was a very un-functional kitchen that didn’t work for us. The plan was to always extend out to the side to be the same width as the rest of the house.

2. For us here at Smeg, the kitchen is the heart of the home. Within the planning process, which parts of the kitchen were the most important to you?

The most important thing for us when planning the kitchen was making it a space, we could entertain in. That the appliances were placed in the correct places and the layout was something that was sociable. After all, the kitchen is the heart of the home. I absolutely love to entertain, so being able to cook/prep and talk to guests whilst hosting was so important to me.

3. When choosing your Smeg range cooker, what features stood out the most?

We really wanted a range cooker, and when researching, the Smeg range cooker really stood out head and shoulders above the rest. The stainless steel looked perfect against the gold hardware. I’m big into mixing metals. Also, the timeless iconic design will stand the test of time. It really is a standout piece. The features that stood out to me were the induction hob, super easy to maintain and clean. The two ovens, the self-cleaning function and an unexpected surprise for me when I didn’t realise until we got it was the little storage area under the oven to store baking trays. It’s a fantastic cooker, and it looks stunning, what's not to love?

4. What advice would you give to people who are thinking about removing their kitchen?

Really do you research, get lots of quotes for different kitchen suppliers. Is it cheaper to source things yourself? Don’t compromise on the things that are important to you, e.g. range cooker over built-in oven and separate hob etc. Make sure you work to a budget, this way you can really see what you can get for your money. Also, our homes are forever changing, can you do it in stages? If you got the kitchen fitted, then could you add a new dining table / bench seating at a later date. I think we need to normalise, renovating takes a long time & a lot of money and that's ok!

5. What are you most excited to cook in your new Classic range cooker?

A roast dinner, I love roast dinner, especially chicken… and the oven capacity is fantastic, I can cook everything at the same time! I’m a coeliac so I can’t wait to experiment with other recipes to make some delicious gluten-free meals.

6. Where did you get your inspiration from?

I am a print designer who has a huge love of colour, so I feel like my home is an extension of me, I really wanted colourful cabinetry, but as it’s a big-ticket item, I decided to keep them neutral, but unobvious, I went for a bronze by paint and paper library, and I have added colour through accessories. At times I was concerned with my choices, but now it’s all together I am absolutely in love. I’m also inspired by the interior works of Alice Palmer, Luke Edward Hall, Sarah Corbett-Winder and Laura Stephens.

7. How would you sum up your new kitchen in five words?

Considered, timeless, traditional yet modern
