Montecoppe: From Farm to Table

Discover Montecoppe, the Bertazzoni family's dairy farm and cheese factory in the Parma countryside, where Parmigiano Reggiano is produced.

For SMEG, the kitchen has always been about more than appliances. Founded in Emilia-Romagna and still led by the Bertazzoni family today, SMEG remains closely connected to the region it calls home, its food, traditions and way of life. That connection extends to Montecoppe, the family’s dairy farm set within the protected Boschi di Carrega Natural Park, just outside Parma.

Here, Parmigiano Reggiano is produced from beginning to end on the farm, from growing forage for the cattle and producing the milk to making and slowly maturing each wheel of cheese. It is a story of provenance, patience and respect for the land, bringing together many of the values that have shaped SMEG for generations.

A tradition shaped by time and place

Each day at Montecoppe begins early. The farm grows the grain and forage used to feed its Italian Friesian and Brown Swiss cattle, which graze in the surrounding fields. Their milk is then processed on site and transformed into Parmigiano Reggiano.

At the heart of the farm is Parmigiano Reggiano, made according to traditional methods and matured slowly to develop its distinctive flavour, aroma and texture. Parmigiano Reggiano can only be produced within its designated region and according to strict requirements covering everything from the cattle's feed and the origin of the milk to how the cheese is made and matured.

This close connection between the land, the animals and the cheesemaking process is central to Montecoppe's approach. From the food grown for the herd to the milk used to make each wheel, every stage can be carefully managed from farm to table

The craft behind every wheel

At Montecoppe, quality begins long before the cheese reaches the table.

The farm follows a short, carefully controlled supply chain, with forage, milk and Parmigiano Reggiano produced within the same environment. Every stage matters, from caring for the land and herd to transforming the milk and allowing each wheel the time it needs to mature. There are no shortcuts. Flavour, texture and character develop gradually, shaped by the quality of the ingredients, the skill of the cheesemakers and time.

For SMEG, there is a natural connection. Great cooking does not need to be complicated. It begins with good ingredients, treated well and allowed to speak for themselves.

A farm with a story of its own

Montecoppe's story can be seen in its architecture as well as its landscape. The farm's striking neo-Gothic building reflects a style found across the province of Parma and has a history stretching back to the 19th century.

Originally purchased in 1858 by Maria Luigia, Duchess of Parma, the building was reconstructed with the neo-Gothic façades that can still be admired today. Once intended to become an oratory, it was never fully completed, leaving behind an unusual piece of local history at the heart of the farm.

A shared way of living

Montecoppe forms part of a wider story that sits close to Smeg’s roots. As a family-led business based in Emilia-Romagna, SMEG has long been shaped by a culture where food, design and everyday life are closely intertwined. Montecoppe reflects that same appreciation for tradition, place and quality.

In the Italian home, the kitchen is more than a functional space. It is somewhere to cook, gather, share meals and spend time together. It is here that the stories of SMEG and Montecoppe naturally meet: one through the tools we use to prepare food, and the other through the ingredients we bring to the table.

Together, they celebrate a way of living built around good food, shared moments and taking time over the things that matter.

Designed to be shared

A generous grating of Parmigiano Reggiano over freshly made pasta. A drizzle of balsamic over seasonal ingredients. A simple dish made for friends and family. Montecoppe's ingredients are at their best when they are simply enjoyed.

Paired with Smeg appliances, they bring the story full circle, connecting how food is prepared with where its ingredients come from. From farm to kitchen to table, it is a celebration of good ingredients, thoughtfully made and shared around the table.
