Inside Our 'At Home With SMEG' Winners Dream Kitchen

From Competition Entry to Dream Kitchen

As part of our 'At Home With SMEG' competition, we invited entrants to share their vision for a dream kitchen featuring SMEG appliances. The prize? The opportunity to bring that vision to life. In total, we received 2,273 incredible entries, each with a unique design.

Our winning homeowner, Heather, transformed her space into a beautifully considered kitchen that balances practicality, personality and timeless design. We caught up with her to learn more about the renovation, their appliance choices, and what she learnt along the way.

1: Tell us about your kitchen renovation. What inspired the design, and how did the final space differ from your original vision?

"The principles stayed largely the same: colour scheme, oak units along the base and flush-to-ceiling cabinets on the wall, lots of texture, wood and plants.

The big pivot was dropping the iconic red fridge, but this particular kitchen admittedly works better with an integrated fridge freezer. The Victoria oven was a total non-negotiable, and I love how much it fits with the heritage of our home, which was built in the 1870s, whilst still having that iconic SMEG character."

2: The colour palette is beautiful. What inspired your choice of cream and storm blue?

"The colour scheme actually started with a treasured painting of New York City that was given to me by a friend over 20 years ago. Her father was a local artist and always painted with such a distinctive palette.
The painting features the muted pink and brown tones I've used on the walls, deeper shades that inspired the pantry, creamy yellow highlights reflected in the tiles and windows, a rich red accent colour and the most beautiful stormy blue, which perfectly matches my SMEG Kettle and Bean-to-Cup Coffee Machine"

3: What features do you love most about your SMEG appliances?

"The Vented Induction Hob is fantastic. It heats instantly and precisely, and the bridging zones mean I can cook large family meals with ease. It's incredibly easy to clean too, taking no more than 30 seconds. Because the extractor is built in, it removes the need for a separate unit, and it's surprisingly powerful.

The Bean-to-Cup coffee machine works hard for us on busy mornings. It adjusts instantly for strength and drink size; it's incredibly easy to use, and there's nothing better than walking into the kitchen to the smell of freshly brewed coffee. It means I'm no longer embarrassed by the quality of coffee I serve to family and friends."

4: Have you cooked anything particularly memorable using your Victoria Steam Oven?

"We've baked sourdough with an excellent crust, cooked endless batches of roast potatoes that are wonderfully crispy, and prepared beautifully juicy roast joints.

I've also grown to love the pyrolytic cleaning function. No one enjoys scrubbing an oven, and being able to simply wipe away the ash after the cleaning cycle has finished is such a game changer."

5: What would your top tip be for anyone planning a kitchen renovation?

"One thing I've realised is that it's easy for the practical elements of a kitchen to outweigh the inviting ones. My biggest piece of advice is to make your kitchen feel as welcoming as the other rooms in your home. I stick to a narrow but warm colour palette, pay close attention to natural light, use lamps on worktops, and incorporate plenty of texture through rugs, fabrics and plants. Appliances are also a key part of the overall scheme, and SMEG creates appliances that genuinely deserve to be on display. Ultimately, I think the best kitchens are not only practical places to cook, but spaces that tell your story and make people want to stay a while."
